Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer

Skills Recognition is the general term given for the assessment of an applicant’s previous learning or skills development for the purpose of gaining credits or exemptions for a partial or full qualification.

Applicants may seek recognition of prior learning for credit in these courses and also recognition of qualifications from other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued through Bowen Training Australia will also be recognised throughout Australia by other RTOs.

Credit Transfer (CT)

BTA_Application_QualificationsRecognition_V2 Oct2015

This is an administrative process where people who have previously successfully completed the same or equivalent unit of competency at another Registered Training Organisation (RTO), can apply for a credit transfer towards the BTA course for which they about to enrol in or are currently enrolled in.

Applying for a Credit Transfer involves the following:

  • Completion of the Recognition of Qualifications Form (F3) and
  • providing certified copies of your Certificate and Statement of attainment from your previous course/qualification.

The BTA Assessor determines suitability of evidence for Credit Transfer and completes the outcome of Recognition Application. Units of competency approved for Credit Transfer are entered on to BTA student’s record system and the applicant is informed in writing of the outcome.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process, which recognises what you have learnt from work experience, life experience or previous study. These experiences are measured against the qualification/unit you are doing or want to do. If what you have learned at work or elsewhere is relevant to your course or qualification, you may not have to do certain units of the qualification again.

Applying for Recognition of Prior Learning involves the following:

  • Completion of a preassessment questionnaire (prior to enrolment)
  • followed by an interview and self-assessment with your assessor
  • then completion of Recognition of Prior Learning Application Form (F9)

If you decide to apply for RPL, you will be asked for detailed records of your experience, employment, training, etc, which may be relevant. Most importantly, you will need to provide evidence that you have the skills and knowledge outlined. You will then have an interview with your assessor who will go through your evidence portfolio with you. You may also be asked questions for added information and undertake a practical assessment.

Please note: RPL is awarded for a total unit of competency (no partial RPL of a unit will be awarded)
